Ethosuximide, m.p. 64-65°, is considered as a 2,
5-pyrrolidinedione. The hydrogen atom of the imide group is acidic and can be
replaced by metals or alkyl groups. It is freely soluble in water, alcohol,
chloroform and ether. It condenses with resorcinol in the
presence of concentrated sulphuric acid to yield aphthaleinlike compound. Its
sodium salt has a bright green fluorescence. It is stored in airtight
containers.
Uses : Ethosuximide is effective in pure petit mal but less
effective in mixed petit mal.
Side Effect
Gastro-intestinal side-effects including nausea, vomiting.
anorexia, gastric upset and abdominal pain occur with ethosuxinide.
