PANTOTHENIC ACID
PANTOTHENIC
ACID
Brand Names : Chick antidermatitis factor, Vitamin B3
Pantothenic acid, an unstable, viscous
oil, extremely hygroscopic, is a factor in the vitamin B complex that is
necessary for the proper gowth of animals.
It is dextrorotatory and is usually
marketed as the calcium salt, calcium D (+)- pantothenate. Pantothenic acid
occurs every where in animal and plant tissues. The richest common sources are
liver, yeast, cereal brans, leafy vegetables diary products and eggs. It may be
prepared by the direct condensation off-alanine with lactone of pantoic acid.
It is easily destroyed by acids, bases and heat.
The vitamin is freely soluble
in water, ethyl acetate, dioxane, glacial acetic acid; moderately soluble in
ether, and amyl alcohol; practically insoluble in benzene and chloroform. One
gram of pantothenic acid equals to 70,000-75,000 chick units.
Calcium Pantothenate (Brand Names : Calpanate; Galamila;
Pantholin).
Calcium pantothenate, m.p. 195-196°
(decomp), occurs as white, odourless, slightly hygroscopic powder. It is
soluble in water and glycerol; practically insoluble in alcohol, chloroform and
ether; reasonably stable to air and light. Rate of hydrolysis is a function of
pH and is catalyzed by the presence ofeletrolytes. Solutions are not stable to
autoclaving, and sterilization by filtration is necessary.
Uses : Pantothenic acid is a vitamin B
substance. It is a component of co-enzyme A which is essential in the
metabolism of carbohydrate, fat, and protein.
