It forms
minute , pale yellow crystals from alcohol . Taste is bitter, m.p. 225-230 (dec); darkens on
exposure to light. It is soluble in hot alcohol; very sparingly soluble in cold
alcohol; insoluble in ter, acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform,
carbon disulphide and petroleum ether.
Uses :
Thiacetazone is used in the primary treatment
of pulmonary tuberculosis with isoniazid supplemented in the initial phase of
treatment, with streptomycin. It is also used in the treatment of leprosy in
daily doses similar to those used in tuberculosis.
Gastro-intestinal disorders, hypersensitivity
reactions, rashes, and vertigo are the most common side-effects of thletion
