ANALGIN
Brand Names : Metamizol;
Benalsis; Maxigen; Novaligin.
Analgin is a white,
crystalline, odourless powder with a scarcely perceptible yellowish tinge. The
taste is bitter. It is freely soluble in water; slightly soluble in alcohol;
practically insoluble in chloroform and isolventether. It is stored in
tightly-closed containers.
When a mixture of
analgin (0.1 g) in water (2 ml), aloohol (5ml) and dilute potassium iodate
solution (5 ml), a crimson red colour is produced which darkens on further
addition of potassium iodate solution. If analgin is heated with diluted
hydrochloric acid, the characteristic odour of sulphur dioxide is produced
followed by that of formaldehyde.
Uses : Anagin is an analgesic agent. It
relieves pain like headache, neuralgia, muscle pain, arthralgia, postoperative
pain, traumatic pain associated with burns, injury, fracture and dental
procedures; also used as antipyretic.
Adverse Effect
Adverse
effects of analgin are dyspepsia, epigastric, discomfort. nausea, vomiting,
blood dyscrasias, skin rashes, insomnia. agranulocytosis, edema, shock
intolerance. hypersensitivity and fall in blood pressure on rapid injection.
