Thiopental sodium is a white to yellowish-white, hygroscopic powder
with alliaceous, garlic-like odour. It is soluble in water (l in 1.5); partly
soluble in alcohol; practically insoluble in ether and petroleum ether. Aqueous
solutions are alkaline to litmus. Solutions decompose on standing; on boiling
precipitation occurs. The drug is stored in airtight containers and protected
from light.
Uses : Thiopentone sodium is administered intravenously for the
induction of anaesthesia and for hypnosis.
