ANTI-FUNGAL AGENTS
Fungal infections are due to poor host resistance and are now common
worldwide. Antifungal agents are used to treat various fungal infections of
hair, mucous membranes, nails, or skin. The fungi of the genera Candida (Co
is). Epidermophyton. Microsporum and Trichophyton (tinea. ringworm) produce
fungal infection. The systemic fungal infections include localized or
disseminated blastomycosis, cryptococosis, candidiasis and other invasive
infections. Antifungal agents are employed locally, e.g. antibiotics (nystatin,
pimaricin, hamycin) or they may be employed systematically, e.g. antibiotics
(griseofulvin, amphotericin B), azole derivatives and flucytosine. Fatty acids
in perspiration have been found to be fungistatic.
