Aspirin
is prepared by the action of acetyl chloride or acetic anhydride on salicylic
acid.
Aspirin, m.p. 135°, is a colourless, odourless, crystalline powder
which is soluble in water (1:300), alcohol (1:6), chloroform (1:17) and ether.
It is stable in dry air, but gradually hydrolyses in contact with moisture to
acetic and salicylic acids. It is decomposed in boiling water or when dissolved
in solutions of alkali hydroxides and carbonates.
Uses: Aspirin has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic
properties. It is used for the relief of pains such as headache, dysmenorrhoea,
myalgias and toothache. It is also used in inflammatory disorders such as
rheumatoid arthritis and to treat colds and influenza.
Side Effect
The most common adverse effects with aspirin therapy are
gastro-intestinal disorders such as nausea, dyspepsia and vomiting, irritation
of gastric mucosa and increasing in bleeding time.
