AZATHOPRINE
Brand Names: Azothioprine Azanin; Imuran; Imurel.
Azathioprine occurs as pale yellow 3 NSN
N odourless crystals or powder. It is practically insoluble in water, alcohol
and chloroform; sparingly soluble in dilute mineral acids; dissolves in dilute
solutions of alkali hydroxides. Solutions of azathioprine sodium for injection
have a pH of 9.8 to 11.0; they are prepared by dissolving in Water for
Injections, immediately before use. The drug is stored in airtight containers
and protected from light.
Uses: Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant and
antineoplastic agent. It is used in the treatment of leukaemia and mainly as an
immunosuppressant for facilitating the survival of organ and tissue
transplants. It is also used in lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis,
renal disorders, chronic active hepatitis and some severe skin disorders.
Side Effect
The side-effects include depression of
the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal disorders, joint pains, rashes, drug fever,
liver damage, and pancreatitis. Solutions for injection are irritant.
