Benztropine mesylate
Benztropine mesylate, m.p. 143°, is
prepared by the action of diphenyldiazomethane on tropine. It is a white,
odourless, slightly hygroscopic, crystalline powder; very soluble in water and
alcohol; practically insoluble in ether; stored in airtight containers.
Uses:
1.
Benztropine mesylate is an
anticholinergic, antihistaminic, local anaesthetic and antimuscarinic agent
with actions similar to those of atropine.
2.
It also has a direct antispasmodic
action on smooth muscle.
3.
It is used for the symptomatic treatment
of parkinsonism and to alleviate the effect induced by drugs such as the
phenothiazine derivatives.
4.
It may minimize drooling, sialorrhea,
masklike facies, oculogyric crises and muscular Cramps.
Side Effect
Side effects of BENZTROPINE MESYLATE.and other antimuscarinic agents include
dryness of mouth, thirst, dilation of the pupils, flushing and dryness of the
skin, bradycardia, reduction of tone, constipation, etc. Sometimes vomiting,
giddiness and staggering may occur. Toxic doses cause tachycardia, rapid
respiration, hyperpyrexia and CNS stimulation.
