BENZYLPENICILLIN
Brand Names : Crystalline penicilin G. Penicilin: Free
penicilin G: Free penicillin II: Benzylpenicillinic acid, Free
benzylpenicillin.
The
name of benzylpenicillin is commonly used to describe either benzylpenicillin
sodium or benzylpenicillin potassium as these are the forms in which
benzylpenicillin is used. Benzyl penicillin is obtained by extraction at ice
temperature of the acidified (pH2) aqueous solution of sodium benzylpenicillin
with ether or chloroform. When kept dry the acid retains its antibiotic potency
for limited periods, but it is rapidly inactivated by small amounts of water.
The product formed on slow inactivation by moisture seems to be
benzylpenicilloic acid.
Benzylpenicillin is an amorphous white powder; sparingly
soluble in water; soluble in methanol, ethanol, ether, ethyl acetate, benzene,
chloroform, and acetone and insoluble in petroleum ether; m.p. 80-87. It forms
methyl ester with diazomethane. It is stored at a temperature not exceeding 30*
in airtight containers.
