Betamethasone, m.p. 231-234° (decomp), is a white to creamy-white,
odourless powder. It is practically insoluble in water; soluble in alcohol and
chloroform. It is kept in airtight containers and protected from light.
Betamethasone acetate (Brand Name: Betafluorene), m.p. 196-2010 and 205-2089, is a white to creamy
white odourless powder. It is slightly soluble in water, more in alcohol and
chloroform; freely soluble in acetone.
It is kept in airtight containers.
Betamethasone Benzoate (Brand Names : W 5975; Behen: Benisone; Flurobate; Parbetan,
Uticort), min 225-228°, is a white, odourless powder which is practically
insoluble in water; soluble in alcohol, chloroform and methyl alcohol. It is
kept in airtight containers.
Betamethasone
Dipropionate (Brand Names : Sch 11460, Diproderm; Diprophos; Diprosone;
Rinderon-DP), mp 170-179°, is a white or creamy-white, odourless powder. It is
practically insoluble in water; sparingly soluble in alcohol; freely soluble in
acetone and chloroform.
Betamethasone Valerate (Brand Names: Bedermin; BetnesolV; Betineval; Betinovate; Bextasol; Celestan-V;
Celestoderm-V; Dermosol; Derrnovaleas; Ecoval 70; Hormezon; Valisone), m.p.
183-1849, is a white to creamy white, odourless powder. It is practically insoluble in water; soluble in alcohol,
chloroform and ether; freely soluble in acetone. It is kept in airtight
containers and protected from light.
Uses : Betamethasone is a glucocorticoid used as antiinflammatory
and immunosuppressant glucocorticoid agent.
Side Effect
The side-effects of betamethasone therapy in large doses are
gluconeogenesis, the action on tissue repair and healing, and inhibitory effect
on the secretion of corticotrophin by pituitary gland. Disturbance of
electrolyte balance is also observed. Other adverse effects include amenorrhoea,
hyperhidrosis, mental disturbances, intracranial hypertension, acute
pancreatitis and aseptic necrosis of bone.
