BIPERIDEN

Biperiden,
m.p. 112-116°, is a white, odourless, crystalline powder. It is freely soluble
in chloroform and methanol; sparingly soluble in alcohol; practically insoluble
in water.
Biperiden hydrochloride (Brand Names; Kineton; Akinophyl). m.p. 275
(dec), is a white, odourless, optically inactive, crystalline powder. It is
slightly soluble in water, alcohol, chloroform, and ether; sparingly soluble in
methanol; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses :
Biperiden
is anticholinergic, antimuscarinic and antiparkinsonian agent used to treat all
types of parkinosonism, to alleviate the extrapyramidal syndrome induced by
drugs, and to eliminate akinesia, rigidity and tremor.
Side Effect
Side effects of biperiden
and other antimuscarinic agents include dryness of mouth, thirst, dilation of
the pupils, flushing and dryness of the skin, bradycardia, reduction of tone,
constipation, etc. Sometimes vomiting, giddiness and staggering may occur.
Toxic doses cause tachycardia, rapid respiration, hyperpyrexia and CNS
stimulation.
