CARBENICILLIN SODIUM
Brand Names: BRL-2064,
Carbenicillin disodium; CP-15639. 2; Anabactyl; Carbapen; Carbecin; Geopen;
Hyoper; Microcillin; Pyocianil, Pyopen, Disodium a-carboxybenzyl penicilin.
Carbenicillin
sodium occurs as a white hygroscopic powder. It is soluble in water (1 in 1.2)
and alcohol (1 in 25); practically insoluble in chloroform and ether. A 10 per
cent solution in water has a pH of 6 to 8. Aqueosis solutions of carbenicillin sodium are reported to be stable for up to 24 hours at room
temperature.
Carbenicillin is not
stable in acids and is inactivated by penicillinases. Carbeniclin sodium is stored at a
temperature not exceeding 5* in well-closed containers.
Uses
Carbenicillin is used in
the treatment of infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, infections due to
non-penicillinase producing strains of Proteus species, systemic infections,
respiratory -tract infections and urinary tract infections.
Adeverse Effect
Adverse effects of carbenicillin are the same as reported for
benzylpenicillin sodium. Purpura and haemorrhage have been reported. Pain at
the injection site and phlebitis may occur. Electrolytic disturbances,
particularly hypokalaemia or hypernatraemia, may follow the administration of
large doses of carbenicillin sodium. The most serious possibility being
hypersensitivity reactions
