CARDIOVASCULAR DRUGS
Cardiovascular
system is related to the circulation of the blood and includes heart and blood
vessels. Cardiovascular drugs are used for their action on the heart or on
other parts cf. the vascular system to modify the total output of the heart or
the distribution of blood to certain parts of the circulatory system.
Carctiovascular agents include cardiotonic drugs (Digitalis glycosides),
vasodilators (esters of nitrous and nitric acid and some alkaloids, e.g.
nicotinylalcohol, dipyridazole), hypotensive drugs that modify cardiac rhythm
(Rauwolfia alkaloids, Veratrum alkaloids and some other compounds like
guanethidine, methyldopa, pargyline), antihypercholesterolemic drugs
(e.g. clofibrate, dextrothyroxine) and sclerosing agents (e.g. invert sugar,
dextrose, ethyl alcohol, iron salts, urea, quinine, soaps,etc
