Cetrímide
Brand Name: Cetrimidum.
Cetrimide consists chiefly of
trimethyltetradecylammonium bromide together with small amounts of dodecyl-and
hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. It may be prepared from a mixture of alkyl
bromide and trimethylamine.
It occurs as a white, voluminous,
free-flowing powder with a faht characteristic odour and bitter soapy taste.
Its 1 part is soluble in 2 parts of water; freely soluble in alcohol and
chloroform and practically insoluble in ether.
Actions and Uses :
1.
Cetrimide is a quaternary ammonium
disinfectant. It is a relatively non-toxic antisepitic with detergent
properties.
2.
It is active against gram positive
organisms and is inactive against acid-fast bacilli and bacterial spores.
3.
Creams and aqueous solutions are used
for treating wounds and burns, for the pre-operative cleansing of the skin, and
for the removal of scabs and crusts in skin diseases.
4.
Cetrimide is also used in the
preparation of cetrimide emulsifying wax and for cleansing and disinfection of
utensils. vessels. and apparatus (0.5-2% solution).
5.
It may be perfumed and may have
colouring matter.
Storage
: It must be kept in a well-closed container and stored at a temperature above 15°.
