CHINIOFEN
Brand Names : Anayodin Quinoxyl,
Yatren.
It is prepared by sulphonating 8-hydroxyquiniline, subjecting the
product to potassium iodide and bleaching powder in the presence of potassium
carbonate, precipitating the derived
phenol with hydrochloric acid and finally, mixing with sodium
carbonate.
Chiniofon is a mixture of
7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5- sulphonic acid, its sodium salt and sodium
carbonate containing about 26-29 per cent of iodinelt is a canary-yellow powder
with a slight odour, a bitter taste producing a sweet sensation later on. On
adding to water, it effervesces due to reaction with the sodium carbonate and
finally dissolves. It forms deep, emeraldgreen colour with dilute ferric
chloridesolution and a dense, white precipitate with copper sulphate
Uses
Chiniofon is used to cure amoebic
dysentery, as a surgical dusting powder and in gonorrhoea and diphtheria.
Halquinol : It is a mixture of 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline
(57-74%), 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline (23-40%) and 7-chloro8-hydroxyquinoline
(4%). Halquinol is a yellow-white voluminous powder with a faint cresol-like
odour; insoluble in water; soluble in most organic solvents. It is protected
from light and kept away from metals. Halquinol is antiamoebic, antibacterial
and antifungal. It is used to treat bacterial and amoebic dysentery and in skin
diseases.
