Chlordiazepoxide is a derivative of 1,4-benzodiazepine.It was
synthesized by Sternbach and co-workers from p-chloroaniline:
Chlordiazepoxide is a light yellow compound, m.p. 236237, used as
hydrochloride; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride (Brand Names : Ansiacal; Bent:
Benzodiapin; Calmoden; Cebrum: Chlordiazachel: Corax, Diazachel, Droxol;
Elenium, Equibral; J-Liberty; Kalimocaps; Labican, Lentoran, Librium, Mildmen;

vita; SKLygen; Tensinyl; Timosin; Trakipeal, Viansin; Viopsicol).
Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride is a colourless crystalline
substance, light sensitive and highly soluble in water but unstable in aqueous
solution due to hydrolysis to the lactam, an amino acid and finally
2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone.
These are the major metabolites of chlordiazepoxide, all primarily
excreted in the urine. The decomposion products are ' detected on silica gel
thin-layer chromatography.
On exposure to light, chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride undergoes the
nitrone rearrangement to give a 4, 5-epoxide:
Uses: Chlordiazepoxide has psychosedative
properties used as sedative and minor tranquillizer. Its abuse may lead to
habituation or addiction.
