CHLOROCRESOL
Chlorocresol is prepared by by chlorination of m-cresol . It
occurs as colourless or white , dimorphous crystalline powder , m.p 63-66'c . It is
volatile in stream . It has charectarestic phenolic odour . It is slightly
soluble in water . 1gm dissolves in 260ml water at 20*c. more soluble in hot
water . slightly soluble in alcohol . freely soluble in ether , fatty oil ,
benzene , chloroform ,acetone ,petroleum
ether , terpens and aqueous alkaline solution . The aqueous solution
acuire a yellowish colour on exposure to light and air .
Storage : It is stored at air tight container and protected from
light .
Uses
1.
Cholorocalciferol is a potent disinfecftant and use as a topical
antiseptic .
2.
It is more active in acid than alkaline solution .
3.
It is alkso used as a preservative in creams and other preparation
for external use which contain water but its effectiveness is reduced if oil ,
fats and nonionic surfectants are present .
