CHLOROXYLENOL
It occurs as white or
cream-colored crystals or crystalline powder with a charectaristic phenolic
order , volatile with
steam, m.p. l l 5 -l 6°. It is very slightly soluble in water, one gram
dissolves in 3 litres of water at 20°; more stable in hot water; soluble one in
one of alcohol (95%), ether, benzene, terpenes, fixed oils; dissolves in
solutions of the alkali hydroxide. It is incompatible with nonionic surfactants
and methylcellulose.
Uses
- Chloroxylenol is a disinfectant, antiseptic, antibacterial and germicide.
- It is used chiefly in the form of chloroxylenol solution for skin and wound disinfection and for mildew prevention. It is claimed to be about 60 times as potent as phenol.
- Chloroxylenol on the recommended dilutions is generally non-irritant but skin sensitivity has occurred
