CHLORPHENIRAMINE MALEATE

powder. It is soluble in water, alcohol and chloroform; slightly soluble in
ether. A 196 solution in water has a pH 4.0 to 5.0. The drug is stored airtight
containers and protected from light.
Chlorpheniramine is one of the most potent oral antihistamines.
The presence of chlorine group of pheniramine in the p-position of the phenyl
ring increases 20-fold potency with no appreciate change in toxicity.
Uses : Chlorpheniramine is an outstanding antihistaminic agent
which exerts useful protection and causes a moderate degree of sedation. In
severe allergies it may be given by injection which may be irritant and
transient hypotension or stimulation of the CNS may occur during rapid
intravenous injection.
