hlorpropamide, m. p. 127-129°, is a derivative of ben- 2043;
zenesulphonamide. It is synthesized from chloro-benzene, which, Diasu on
treatment with chlorosulphonic acid, yields 4- Orina chlorobenzenesulphonyl
chloride. Reaction with excess of Diab ammonia forms the sulphonamide, which is
refluxed with ethyl Oterb chloroformate to produce ethyl
N-4-chlorophenylsulphonyl- The substituted urothane on
condensation with N-propylamine forms chlorpropamide.

Chlorpropamide is a white, odourless, crystalline powder which is
soluble in water at pH 6, practically insoluble at pH 7.3; in alcohol;
moderately soluble in chloroform; sparingly soluble in ether and benzene.
Uses: Chlorpropamide is a sulphonylurea hypoglycaemic agent which
is used in the treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Side Effect
The side-effects include gastro-intestinal disturbances such as
nausea, vomiting, heartburn, anorexia, constipation, diarrhoea, and metallic
taste. They may also cause headache, dizziness, weakness, paraesthesia, and
tinnitus.
