Clofibrate, b.p. 148-150°, is a stable,
clear, colourless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic faintly
acrid odour. It is very slightly soluble in water; miscible with alcohol,
chloroform and ether; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Clofibrate is readily hydrolyzed by
serum enzymes in gastrointestinal tract to yield free acid. It is effective in
lowering serum triglycerides.
Uses : Clofibrate
is used as a hypolipidaemic agent and for the prophylaxis of ischaimic heart
disease.
