Coramine is a colourless or slightly yellow oily liquid or
crystalline mass with a slight characteristic odour and a faintly bitter taste
followed by a faint sensation of warmth, m.p. 24-26°, b.p. 296-300. It is
miscible with water; alcohol, chloroform, and ether; incapatible with sodium
carbonate solutions which cause precipitation.
Uses:
Coramine is a respiratory stimulant. It has an intermediate
central stimulant effect. It is injected to counteract respiratory depression
following administration of depressant drugs such as the barbiturates. It has
low toxicity.
