CYPROHEPTADINE

CYPROHEPTADINE

Brand Name : Periactinol.

Cyproheptadine is synthesized from a ketone consisting of two benzene rings fused in a linear fashion to a seven membered ketone. It is first brominated with N- bronosuccinimide (NBS) and then dehydrobrominated by treatment with  triethylamine. The product is reacted with the Grignard reagent, N-methyl-4-piperidyl magnesium chloride, to yield a complex. This is dehydrated by solution in acetic acid and then treated with hydrogen chloride and acetic anhydride to yield cyproheptadine hydrochloride.

Cyproheptadine, m.p. 112-114, is a crystalline compound.

Cyproheptadine hydrochloride (Brand Names : Anarexol; Antegan; Ifrasarl; Nuran; Periactin; Vimicon; Cipractin; Peritol), Imp. 252-254 (decomp), is a white to slightly yellow, odourless, crystalline powder which is soluble in water, alcohol, methanol and chloroform; practically insoluble in ether.
