DEMECLOCYCLINE
DEMECLOCYCLINE
Brand
Name : RP 10192; Bioterciclin; Declomycin; Deganol; Ledermycin; Periciclina
Demeclocycline hydrochloride is
an antimicrobial substance produced by the growth of certain strains of
Strepomyces aureofaciens and firstisolated by McCormicket al. (1957).
It
differs from chlortetracycline only by the absence of the methyl group on
carbon atom 6. The stability of ring C is enhanced to both acid and alkali due
to the absence of this methyl group. It occurs as a yellow, odourless, crystalline
powder. It is slightly solubleinwater (1 in 30-60), methylalcohol (1 in 50),
and alcohol; practically insolubleinacetone, chloroform, and ether; soluble in
aqueous solutions of alkalihydroxides and carbonates. Similar to the other
tetracyclines, it may cause infrequent photosensitivity reactions.
Demeclocycline hydrochloride
(Brand Names: Clortetrin; Demetraciclina; Detravi's Meciclin; Mixocine).
Demeclocycline and its salts are kept in airtight containers and protected from
light.
Uses:
Demeclocycline has the
antimicrobial activity and uses described for tetracycline hydrochloride. It is
excreted more slowly and effective blood concentrations are maintained for a
longer period.
