The compound is
the 5,7-di-iodo derivative of 8hydroxyquinoline, from which it is prepared by directiodination
by the action of iodine monochloride or potassium iodate. The iodine atoms
enter the activated benzenoid ring in the positions ortho-and para-to the
directing -OH group.
The compound is a light yellowish to tan-coloured,
microcrystalline powder, odourless powder, not readily wetted in water.
Practically it is insoluble in water; sparingly soluble in alcohol and ether.
Uses
Di-iodohydróxyquinoline is a
luminal amoebicide acting principally in the bowel lumen and is used in the
treatment of intestinal amoebiasis. It is given alone in the treatment of
asymptomatic cyst-passers. It is also given in the treatment of balantidiasis
and the infestation by Trichomonas hominis (intestinalis). It has
anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity and has been used topically in various
skin conditions, usually along with a corticosteroid
Adverse Effect
In high doses for long term, the adverse effects are optic
neuritis, optic atrophy, peripheral neuropathy, gastro-intestinal effects such
as abdominal cramps, nausea, and diarrhoea. Other side-effects are the same as
for iodochlorhydroxyquin.
