Diazepam is a white or yellow, odourless, crystalline powder, m.p.
125-126'. It is slightly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol and freely
soluble in chloroform; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Diazepam is metabolized in the liver, one of the metabolic compound is the
3-hydroxy derivative, known as oxazepam, which is also a sedative and muscle
relaxant.
Uses : Diazepam is a benzodiazepine having anticonvulsant,
anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and amnestic properties. It is used in
the treatment of anxiety and tension states, as sedative and premedicant, in
the control of muscle spasm, as in tetanus and in the management of alcohol
withdrawal symptoms. It is given in cases of minor surgery, endoscopy, in
dentistry to calm the patient.
