Brand Names : Carbamazine, 84L;
RP 3799; Banocide; Carbilazine; Caricide; Cypip; Ethodryl; Notezine; Spatonin;
Hetrazan.
Diethylcarbamazine, which is 1-diethyl CH3 2
carbamoyl-4-methylpiperazine, is prepared by condensingpiperazine with
diethylcarbamoyl chloride. (prepared from diethylamine and carbonyl chloride)
and then methylating the other nitrogen atom with formaldehyde.
Diethylcarbamazine, m.p. 47-49, is a
crystalline compound. Its-hydrochloride is very soluble in water; soluble in
chloroform and dioxane.
Diethylcarbamazine Citrate (Brand Names:
Franocide: Filazine; Loxuran; Longicid; Dirocide; Filaribits; Hetrazan), m.p.
141 - 143°, is a colourless, crystalline solid; freely soluble in water;
sparingly soluble in cold alcohol; practically insoluble in benzene, acetone,
ether, and chloroform. A 1 per cent solution has a pH of 4.1. The drug is
stable under various climatic conditions and moisture. It is stored in airtight
containers. Solution should be protected from light.
Uses : Diethylcarbamazine is used as an
anthelmintic and antifilarial agent .
