Names : Cordioxil; Davoxin; Digacin; Dilanacin; Dixina; Dynamos; Lanacordin;
Lanicor; Lanoxin; Lenoxin; Rougoxin; |anoxin
Digoxin is a cardiotonic glycoside obtained from the leaves fD.
lanata or D. orientalis (Fam.Scrophulariaceae). Acid hydrolysis of digitoxin yields 1 mole
of digoxigenin and 3 moles of digitoxose. The sugar residue is
attached to the hydroxyl group at C-3 of the aglycone.
Digoxin, m. p. 230-265° (decomp), occurs as odourless, olourless,
or white crystals or a white powder.
It is practically insoluble in water, acetone, ether, ethyl
acetate; slightly soluble in chloroform and in alcohol; freely soluble in a
mixture of equal volumes of chloroform and methanol and in pyridine.
Digitoxin is less cumulative and its duration of action is shorter
than that of digitoxin.
Uses : Digoxin is used in the treatment of congestive heart
failure and cardiac tachyarrhythmia. In cardiac failure, the increased force of
myocardial contraction results in increased cardiac output.
When given by mouth, digoxin may take effect within 2 hours and
the maximum effect may be reached in about 6 hours.
