DIHYDROTACHYSTEROL
Brand Names: Dichystrolum; Anti-tetany substance 10; AT 10;
Antitanill; Calcamine; Dygratyll; Dihydral; Hytakerol; Parterol; Tachyrol.
Dihydrotachysterol, m.p. 125-127°,
occurs as colourless or white crystals or crystalline powder. It is soluble in
alcohol; freely soluble in chloroform; sparingly soluble in vegetable oils and
practically insoluble in water. It has slight antirachitic activity. It causes
an increase of the calcium concentration in the blood. It is used in infantile
tetany and postoperative tetany. It is stored at a temperature not exceeding
15° in hermetically sealed glass containers in which the air has been replaced
by an inert gas. It is protected from light.
Uses: Vitamin D is involved in the regulation of calcium
and phosphate and bone formation. Its deficiency leads a syndrome characterized
by lacking of calcium and phosphate and bone softening and bone pain. Vitamin D
is used in the treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency states.
Adverse Effect
Excessive intake of vitamin D increases
calcium concentration in plasma causing anorexia, nausea, vomiting.
constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, mental disturbances, polydipsia,
polyurea, bone pain, renal calculi. cardiac arrhythmias and coma.
