Diphenhydramine is a tertiary amine of typically aliphatic character. It is prepared by treating benzhydryl bromide with 2-dimethylaminoethanol in the presence of alkali.

M. p. 166-1 7Oo, is a white. odourless, crystalline powder. Itskowly darkens on exposure to light. It is soluble in water, alcohol. acetone and chloroform: very slightly soluble in ether and benzene; pH of 1% aqueous solution is about 5.5. The aqueous solution forms a pink precipitate with saturated Reinecke's salt. It is stored in airtight containers and protected from light.

Uses:

Diphenhydramine is an antihistaminic agent; it has pronounced sedative properties and anti-emetic, anti-muscarinic and local anaesthetic actions. It is used to control parkinsonian symptoms and to treat nausea and vomiting. It is included in preparations for coughs and common cold.

As an antihistaminic agent diphenhydramine is given invarious allergic condition and as antispasmodic. It is used to treat urticaria, hay fever, bronchial asthma, vasomotor rhinitis and some dermatoses

Side Effect


The most common side effects include sedation and drowsiness
