Diphenylhydantoin sodium is a white, odourless, slightly
hygroscopic crystalline powder which on exposure to air absorbs carbon dioxide
with the liberation of phenytoin. It is soluble in water, the solution showing
some turbidity due to partial hydrolysis, and absorption of carbon dioxide;
also soluble in alcohol; practically insoluble in chloroform and ether. It is
stored in airtight containers.
Uses : Diphenylhydantoin is an antiepileptic agent used to control
grand mal, partial seizures, and prophylactic control of seizures developed
after neurosurgery.
Side Effect
Side-effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, ataxia,
slurred speech, diplopia, nystagmus and mental confusion.
