Doxycycline hydrochloride occurs as a yellow hygroscopic
crystalline powder which crystallizes from ethanol and hydrochloric acid
mixture)It chars without melting at about 201°. It is biologically more active
than the corresponding 6pepimer hydrochloride.
Doxycycline hydrochloride is
soluble in water (1 in 3) and methyl alcohol (1 in 4); sparingly soluble in
alcohol; practically insoluble in chloroform and ether; soluble in solutions of
alkali hydroxides and carbonates. Doxycycline and its salts are stored in
airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses
Doxycycline hydrochloride is used for the same purposes as
tetracycline hydrochloride. It is readily absorbed and excreted more slowly
than most other tetracyclines and effective blood concentrations are maintained
for longer periods. The adverse effects as the same as for tetracycline
hydrochloride
