EPHEDRINE
Brand Names : Hydrated Ephedrine;
Efedrina; Ephedrinum.
Ephedrine is an alkaloid obtained from the Eastern drug, Ma Huang
(Ephedra vulgaris, E. sinica; E. equisetina; Family Gnetaceae).
It has two
asymmetric carbon atoms; thus there are four optically active structures.
Isomeric forms include d- and 1-ephedrineas well as d- and - pseudoephedrine. The l-ephedrine
and d-pseudoephedrine are the naturally occurring
isoners
Ephedrine is a colourless crystalline powder, m.p. 79; soluble in
water, alcohol, ether, chloroform and oils. In light it gradually decomposes
and darkens. Ephedrine hyedrochloride, m.p. 187-1889 and ephedrine sulphate,
m.p. 247, are white odourless crystalline powders, soluble in water and
alcohol: both are effected by light. The drug is stored at a temperature not exceeding 8* in airtight
containers and protected from light.
Uses : Epidhrine a sympathomimetic agent , has been used to
counteract hypotension associated with anaesthesia; as a mydriatic; in allergic
reactions and as a CNS stimulant. Ephedrine salts
have been used in the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion associated with the common cold, hay-fever,
sinusitis.
Adverse Effect
Adverse effects of ephedrine are the same as described under
adrenaline.
