ETHACRYNIC ACID

Ethacrynic acid, m.p. 121-120°, is an unsaturated
derivative of a dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. It is a white, odourless,
crystalline powder; sparingly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol,chloroform
and ether; dissolves in ammonia and in dilute aqueous solutions of alkali
hydroxides carbonates; stored in airtight containers. Sodium salt, called
ethacrynate sodium or Lyovac sodium edecrin, is soluble in Water.
Uses
: Ethacrynic acid is a diuretic and used similarly to chlorothiazide.
Side Effect
The side effects of ethacrynic acid are fluid and electrolyte
imbalance, hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, gastro-intestinal disturbances,
hypochloremic, alkalosis, and deafness in patients with uremia. Other adverse
effects include confusion, fatigue, nervousness, and apprehensiveness.
