ETHAMBUTOL

Etambol.
It is a white, odourless, crystalline powder freely soluble
in waterti.l), alcohol (1.4); slightly soluble in chloroform; practically
insoluble in ether; m.p. 87-89. )
Ethambutol is
stereospecific in activity. The dextro isomer is 16 times as active as the meso
isomer and the laevo isomer is even less active than the meso isomer.
Uses :
Ethambutol hydrochloride is used with other
antituberculous agents in the treatment of tuberculosis. It is rapidly absorbed
after oral administration. Many patients cannot tolerate therapeutic doses of
ethionamide and have to discontinue treatment. The most common adverse effects
are dose-related : gastro-intestinal disturbances, including anorexia,
excessive salivation, a metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, and
diarrhoea. Dizziness, drowsiness, headache, postural hypotension, and asthenia
may also occur occasionally. Although jaundice is rare, hepatitis may occur in
about 5% of patients receiving ethionamide
