Ethotoin is prepared by heating the potassium salt of 5-phenylhydantoin with ethyl bromide in alcohol at 100° in a sealed tube. It occurs as prism-type crystals from water, m.p. 94°. It is sparingly soluble in cold water, more soluble in hot water; freely soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, and dilute aqueous solutions of alkali hydroxides.


Uses : Ethotoin is used as an anticonvulsant for the control of grand malepilepsy. Adverse reactions include blood dyscrasias, skin rash, ataxia, and gum hypertrophy. The drug may be used alone, but it is most frequently used in combination with other anticonvulsants.
