FLUORESCEIN SODIUM
Brand Nannes : Soluble fluorescein; Resorcinol Phthalein sodium;
Uranin(e); Uranine yellow; D&C yellow No.8; C.I.Acid
yellow 73; C.I. No. 45350; COONa Funduscein; Resorcinolphthalein sodium;
Soluble fluorescein.
Fluorescein is a dye of the phthalein group. It is prepared by
condensing phthalic anhydride with resorcinol by melting the two substances
together in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride or other suitable
condensing agent.
Fluorescein occurs as red, sparingly soluble crystals. It
dissolves freely in aqueous sodium hydroxide, forming a sodium salt.
Fluorescein sodium is a disodium salt which occurs as an orange-red, odourless,
hygroscopic powder.
It is soluble in water with yellow-red colour and intense
yellowish-green fluorescence. The fluorescence disappears when the solution is
made acidic and re-appears when the solution is again made neutral or alkaline.
It is kept in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses:
Sodium fluorescein is used as an ophthalmologic diagnostic agent
for detecting corneal lesions and foreign bodies. It is used as an aid to the
fitting of hard contact lenses and to differentiate healthy
tissues from diseased or damaged tissues.
Side Effect
The intravenous injection of fluorescein sodium may produce nausea
and vomiting. Allergic reactions may consistofurticaria. The skin and urine may
be coloured yellow but that is transient. Patients may also experience an
unpleasant taste.
