Fluorouracil, a pyrimidine analogue, m. p. F 282-283 (decomp), is
a white, odourless, 0 crystalline powder. It is sparingly soluble in water;
slightly soluble in alcohol; practically insoluble in chloroform and ether. A 1
per cent solution has a pH of 4.3 to 5.3.
Uses : Fluorouracilis an antineoplastic agent which is used in
malignant neoplasms, especially those of the gastro-intestinal tract, breast,
liver, genito-urinary system, and pancreas.
Side Effect
The main adverse effects of fluorouracil are on the bone marrow
and the gastro-intestinal tract. Leucopenia, stomatitis, gastro-intestinal
ulceration, bleeding and severe diarrhoea are signs that treatment should be
stopped.
