FOLINIC ACID --SF
FOLINIC ACID --SF
Folinic acid is an intermediate product of the metabolism of folic
acid; the active form into which that acid is converted in the body, ascorbic
acid being a necessary factor in the conversion process. Folinic acid and not
folic acid is the natural factor in digests of liver and that folic acid arises
from folinic acid. Folinic acid can be
prepared from folic acid by formylation, reduction and autoclaving or the
action of dilute alkali. It also can be prepared by the formylation of
tetrahydrofolic acid.
Folinic acid occurs as crystalline
material, m.p. 240-250°. It is sparingly soluble in water; pH of saturated
aqueous solution is 2.8-3.0 at which pH partial decomposition takes place. It
is more stable at neutral or mildly alkaline pH.
Calcium Folinate (Brand names : Calcium Leucovorin; NS3590;
Leucovorin calcium) is a yellowish-white or yellow,
odourless powder. It is very soluble in water; practically insoluble in
alcohol; protected from light..
Uses: Folinic acid is used as an antidote to
folic acid antagonists. such as methotrexate. It is effective in the treatment
of megaloblastic anaemia.
