GIΤΟΧΙΝ
Brand Names : Anhydrogitalin; Bigitalin; Pseudogitoxin.
Gitoxin is a secondary glycoside obtained mainly from Digitalis
purpurea and D. lanata (Scrophulariaceae). It is - a by-product of digitoxin
production. On acid hydrolysis it yields 1 mole of gitoxigenin and 3 moles of
digitoxose.
Gitoxin, m.p. 285° (decomp), is a colourless crystalline compound.
It is insoluble in chloroform, ethyl acetate and acetone,
but dissolves in a mixture of chloroform and alcohol or in pyridine or in
dilute alcohol. It is very poorly absorbed and used as a cardiotonic agent.
