GLUTETHIMIDE
Brand Names : Elrodorm; Doriden-sed; Doriden;
2-Ethyl-2-phenylglutarimide.
Glutethimide occurs as odourless,
white crystalline powder, m.p. 102-103°; practically insoluble in water,
soluble in alcohol (1 in 5), chloroform (1 in < 1), ether (1 in 12),
acetone, ethyl acetate and methanol. A saturated solution in water is acidic to
litmus. It is stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses: Glutethimide is a hypnotic and sedative. In therapeutic
doses side-effects include nausea, headache, excitement, hangover, blurred
vision and sometimes skin rashes. Abuse may lead to habituation or addiction.
