HALOTHANE

Halothane is a clear, mobile,
dense, non-flammable, highly volatile liquid; odour is chloroform-like
characteristic, sweetish, and unpleasant; b. p. 50°. It is slightly soluble in
water (1 in 400); miscible with dehydrated alcohol, chloroform, ether,
trichloroethylene and fixed oils.
Halothane is soluble in rubber. In the
presence of moisture it reacts with many metals. It is stored at a temperature
of 8° to 15° in airtight containers and protected from light..
Uses : Halothane is a volatile anaesthetic administered by
inhalation. It is non-inflammable and is not explosive when mixed with oxygen.
It is not irritant to skin and mucous membranes. Anaesthesia is rapidly and
easily induced and recovery is quick and complete. It is also used as
refrigerants.
Side Effect
Halothane has depressant action on the
cardiovascular system and reduces blood pressure; signs of overdosage are
bradycardia and profound hypotension. Hepatic dysfunction, hepatitis and
necrosis have been reported following the use of halothane.
