HAMYCIN
HAMYCIN
Brand Name : Primamycin
Hamycin is a polyene antibiotic complex
produced by Streptomyces primprina. At one time, hamycin was believed to be
identical to trichomycin and candicidin. Subsequent HPLC studies have shown the
three polyene antibiotics to be different compounds. Structural study showed
that hamycin was a mixture of components A, B, C and D.
Hamycin occurs as a yellow amorphous
powder with no definite melting point. It decomposes at 1609. It is an
amphoteric compound which is almost insoluble in water, benzene, chloroform,
lower aliphatic alcohols and ether; soluble in basic solvents such as pyridine,
collidine, and in aqueous lower alcohols. In concentrated sulphuric acid it
forms stable blue colour.
Hamycin has been reported to have
antifungal and antitrichomonal properties. It has been administered topically
and by mouth in a variety of fungal infections.
