Reduction of the 3,4-position of the thiadiazine ring increases
activity of the benzothiadiazines, lowers the toxicity and increases the
activity by about 10 times.
Hydrochlorothiazide is a reduced
derivative of benzothiadiazine. It is a white, odourless, crystalline powder,
m.p. 273-275°, slightly soluble in water, alcohol and methanol;soluble in
acetone; freely soluble in dimethylformamide , n-butylamine and solution of
alkali hydroxides; insoluble in ether, chloroform and dilute mineral acids;
stored in well closed containers.
Uses : Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic with
actions, uses and adverse effects similar to those of chlorothiazide.
