Indomethacin is a white to yellow-tan, odourless, crystalline powder. It shows polymorphism having melting points at 155° and 162°. It is practically insoluble in water; soluble in alcohol, chloroform and ether. It is stable in neutral or slightly acidic media; decomposed by strong alkali and in sunshine. It is kept in well-closed containers and protected from light.

Uses : Indomethacin has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. It is used in rheumatic disorders, pain conditions and to close a patent ductus arteriosus in premature infants.


Adverse Effect

The commonest adverse effects with indomethacin therapy are gastro-intestinal disorders, headache, and dizziness. Other side effects are depression, drowsiness, tinnitus, confusion, insomnia, psychiatric disorders, syncope, convulsions, coma, peripheral neuropathy, blurred vision, etc.
