INOSTOL
INOSTOL
Brand Names : myo-Inositol; meso-Inositol;
i-Inasitol; Cyclohexanehexol; Cyclohexitol; Meat sugar; Inosite; Mesoinosite;
Phaseomannite; Dambose; Nucite; Bios I; Rat antispectacled eye factor.
Inositol is widely distributed in plants
and animals. It is prepared from natural sources, such as corn steep liquors.
Among nine possible stereisomers, seven forms are optically inactive or meso.
Two optically active forms, the racemic form, and several cis, trans-isomers,
occur naturally.
Inositol, m.p. 225-227, is a white,
crystalline powder and is soluble in water and dilute alcohol; slightly soluble
in alcohol, in usual organic solvents and in fixed oils.
Inositol occurs in cereal grains, citrus
fruits \other plant parts, yeast molds, eggs, blood, milk, liver, brain,
kidney, heart muscle and other sources. The concentration of inositol in leaves
reaches a maximum shortly before the fruit ripens.
Inositol is found free and combined in
nature. The natural product, phytic acid, is inositol hexaphosphate. Inositol,
a lipotropic, has been used in the treatment of lipid metabolic disorders and
diabetes mellitus.
Lyxoflavine : It is the L-lyxose
analogue of riboflavin isolated from human myocardium. It is yellow to orange
crystalline substance, mp 283-284° (decomp); sparingly soluble in water; even
less soluble in alcohol; freely soluble with decomposition in alkaline aqueous
solution. It is a growth promoting agent in foodstuffs.
