IOPANOIC ACID
Brand Names : Colepax; Telepaque; Teletrast; Iodopanoic acid.
Iopanoic acid is prepared from the product of a Perkin
condensation of m-nitrobenzaldehyde and butyric anhydride by reduction of the
double bond and nitro-group, and iodination of the resulting amine in the
reactive otho- and para positions.
Iopanoic acid, mp l55-157, is a white to cream-coloured powder.
odourless or with a distinct faint odour. It is insoluble in water; soluble in
alcohol and other organic solvents; soluble in aqueous solutions of alkali
hydroxides; protected from light.
Uses: Iopanoic acid is a
diagnostic agent (radiopaque medium) used for the examination of the biliary tract.
It is given by mouth with a light fat-free meal about 10 to 14 hours before
x-ray examination.
Side Effect
Iopanoic acid gives rise to nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramp,
diarrhoea, and more rarely, dysuria. Acute renal failure, thrombocytopenia and hypersensitivity
reactions have been reported. Iopanoic acid has a uricosuric effect.
