Isoproterenol hydrochloride, m.p. 170-1719, is a white. odourless,
crystalline powder. It gradually darkens on exposure to air and light. It is
soluble in water and alcohol: practically insoluble in chloroform, ether and
benzene, its aqueous solutions become pink on standing. It is stored in
airtight containers and protected from light. -
The presence of a larger alkyl
(isopropyl) group on the anino group eliminates circulatory effects except
palpitation of the heart.
Uses : Isoproterenol is a
sympathomimetic agent, chiefly as bronchodilator. It stimulates the central
nervous system. It has a powerful stimulating action on the heart and increases
cardiac output and rate. It also causes peripheral vasodilation and produces a
fall in diastolic blood pressure.

Prolonged use of isoprenaline may lead to Ir
resistance, eventual deterioration and severe damage to the teeth
