MANNITOL
Brand Names : Mannite; Manna sugar; Cordycepic acid;
Manicol; Mannidex; Diosmol; Osmitirol; Osmosal;
Mannitol, m.p. 166-168°, is a white, odourless crystalline powder
or granules with a sweet taste. It is soluble in water; slightly soluble in
alcohol and pyridine; practically insoluble in ether; soluble in solutions of
alkali carbonates and hydroxides.
Uses : Monnitol is diuretic used to increase urine flow in
patients with acute renal faliure to reduce intra-ocular pressure prior
to ophthalmic procedures, to promote the excretion of dis toxic substances by
forced diuresis, as diluent and excipientin in pharmaceutical preparations, as
a bulk "sweetener, for determination of the glomertular filtration-rate,
to treat patients with renal failure.

In industry mannitol is used with boric acid in the manufacturing
of dry electrolytic condensers for radio applications; In making artificial
resins and plasticizers; in analytical chemistry for boron determination; as
anticalking and free-flow agent, flavouring agent, lubricant and release agent,
stabilizer, thickener and nutritive sweetener.
Side Effect
The most common side effects associated
with mannitol therapy are fluid and electrolyte imbalance, circulatory
overload, acidosis, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, thirst, headache, dizziness,
chills, fever, etc.
